this is wjz tv, baltimore. >> from the city to the counties to your neighborhood, now it's complete coverage, it's wjz, maryland's news station. what went wrong? a police trainee shot in the head by his instructor. the instructor could face criminal charges. >> the violation of training policy revealed in our investigation. here's what people are talking about tonight. >> new revelations about a police training day turned tragic. the trainee still in very bad shape at the hospital. we investigated breeches of pro toe cool and the moments leading up to his shooting. we have the latest details. >> reporter: that training officer has now been identified as william scott kearns. he is an 18-year-veteran of the

baltimore police department. a baltimore city police training officer could face criminal charges after a training exercise went terribly wrong. state police now investigating what happened inside the old rosewood hospital sight. >> we will sit back and wait for the investigation to be completed. once that is done, we'll review it and determine what if any charges need to be brought. >> reporter: uncovered more than a dozen trainees were at the facility with two baltimore city training officers. after a lunch break, officer william scott kearns resumed training without his fellow instructor. both instructors are supposed to check for service weapons. officer kearns mistook his service weapon for a training weapon and shot the trainee. members were out here today

interviewing staff. they have temporarily shut down the academy. >> we want to make sure we get to the bottom of it. >> reporter: legal expert says consequences for officer kearns will likely be within the department. >> their career is in big, big trouble. maybe even termination. my guess would be it's probably not going to be criminal. >> reporter: a state police investigation is expected to take weeks. and six police officers have now been suspended including officer kearn and the director of the police academy. >> thank you. the police union president tells our media partner that scott kearn loves being a city officer and feels remorseful about the incident. dozens of accidents and one death when many woke up to icy road conditions. a woman was killed when her suv

slammed into a cement truck and another blast of winter weather is likely headed this way. bob will have details coming up in the forecast. so close but so far. the cruise nightmare is almost over for 4000 people stranded for days in squalor and little food or electricity. here's a live look right now at the carnival triumph where passengers are allowed to get off ship. >> reporter: passengers wave from the deck as it pulled into port ending a miserable week at sea. next up for them, the wait to step on to dry land. >> because of the lack of power aboard the ship, the demarcation process could take 4-5 hours. >> reporter: the triumph set out last thursday for a four- day cruise. that changed sunday when an

engine fire knocked out power. one of the passengers say conditions deteriorated quickly. >> really bad part was there was no running water and toilets for almost the first 30 hours. once they finally did get running water, the toilets only worked in certain places. >> reporter: carnival released for buss to carry passengers to new orleans or houston and galveston, texas. beth had several family members on board including her daughter. she says her journey will end right here. >> absolutely no, don't want to get in any vehicle to travel again. >> reporter: carnival will take 4-5 hours to get everyone off the ship and moving toward their next destinations bringing an end to a vacation most would probably rather

forget. >> for their trouble, the passengers will get $500 in cash, a full refund of their trip, and a discount on future cruises. one of the biggest stars of london's summer olympics charged with murdering his girlfriend. last summer, he became the first double amputee runner to compete at the games. police in south africa say he shot his girlfriend, a well- known model, four times inside his home just hours before he tweeted about valentine's day saying it should be a day of love for everyone. police say were called to his home for domestic trouble in the past. witnesses told investigators they heard screaming before the shooting. a university of maryland student is out of the hospital tonight wounded when his roommate went on a shooting spree in their backyard. the sole survivor managed to run away with a bullet in his leg. >> reporter: police say

graduate student had been diagnosed with a mental illness for more than a year before tuesday morning's bizarre rampage. he took his own life after killing one of his roommates and shooting another roommate in the leg. >> we're just thankful that he's alive. we don't know how he survived it. it was just a miracle. >> reporter: his stepson was awakened by several small fires. when they went out together to put out those flames, he opened fire. >> saw the gun coming out of the kid's pocket and just had a sense that something wasn't right. as he turned to run, that's when he got hit. he felt his leg and something was there and just decided i just have to go, just have to run. >> reporter: although neil is at home and doing well, he isn't ready to speak with reporters until after he speaks with the mother of his murdered

roommate. rain who graduated high school is slated to be laid to rest in pennsylvania as the campus mourns his death, neil o.s family counts their blessing. >> we can't imagine how the other family is feeling, steven's parents. it makes us sick to our stomachs: >> reporter: in addition to the handgun used in the shooting, green also had a machete and an oozie in his bag. >> the funeral for rain will be held in pennsylvania on saturday. a ray rice imperson nay to sets up a fake face clean book page to try to contact women and girls. the imposter was asking for face to face meetings. the facebook page has been taken down and rice says he hopes this incident will persuade parents to talk to their children about online

safety. maryland is weeks away from its first ever casino games. hollywood casino will have craps, poker, and blackjack as early as march. they're hoping the games bring this big economic booms. we have more on the statewide plan to cash in. >> reporter: operators say the expansion of table games will make them full-fledged casinos. when it opened in 2010, it was one of the biggest thicks to hit the small town of perry. nearly three years later, the operators want to up the anti on gambling. voters approved the expansion of table games. the casino will start table gaming in march. >> we'll be able to draw people that have never been here before, now give them a reason to come. >> reporter: maryland live

casino has started training table game dealers. >> i'd rather be behind the scenes dealing than spending my money. >> we expect to be flipping cards and rolling dice by early spring. >> reporter: it's estimated the expansion will generate 1200 new jobs at maryland live and 100 new jobs at hollywood casino. the expansion of games make them more attractive to customers. >> this will make us a full- fledged casino. >> reporter: they believe they are at this time still waiting on those permits and state regulators. once they are in place, they think revenues will pick up. maryland live doesn't have a start game for table games yet. they're planning for sometime this spring. if you're single on this valentine's day of love, you're in the right city to change your status. baltimore is the second best

formed in the town's park. no one has beenen injured. no buildings are in the danger. they're not sure how long it will take to repair ground. the lucky seven grocery store in massachusets isn't so lucky for one would-be robber. he's caught on camera entering the store with a knife. the clerk pulls out a four-foot sword and chases the suspect out of the sword. last year he fought off a robber with his fists and he has no plans to back down and give in. the man wanted by the lapd is confirmed dead. the remains of christopher dorner were positively identified. before the shoot out and fire, dorner ambushed the owners of the resort. >> he continued to say to us

quite frequently he would not kill us and he just asked us to do what he asked. >> jim and karen were able to get free and call police after dorner fled in their car. police say dorner killed four people. he wanted revenge for his firing from the department. the coroner has not released the cause of death. meat wholesaler in france is being identified as the main culprit in europe's horse meat scandal. horse meat has been identified in a number of products. the company knowingly sold the horse meat as beef. three men were also arrested at a meat plant in whales. the fraudulent meat sales have reached across 13 countries but they won't say which one. drug agents swarm their property in search of a meth lab. the buckets and tubing were being used to produce homemade

learned noah was cutting himself and had posted a suicide note online. she needed to do something fast. >> i put it out there. i was desperate. it was a survival plea. >> she came up with the idea to maybe have friends send letters of encouragement to make me feel better. >> reporter: just in time for her son's 13th birthday last week. noah has a favorite letter from his 4th grade teacher. >> he told me how he went through that, how amazing i was. >> reporter: the letters have come from all over the world, including korea and as far as away as australia. the family says it hasn't taken an official tally of just how many letters, but one thing is for sure -- they don't want them to end. >> the world is truly amazing if you look past the dark side. >> reporter: all kind words for a mother and son.
